EM Land Services is an excavation contractor based in Monticello, Florida. We bring the excavator out to private land and move dirt. That covers digging and shaping ground, pulling stumps and roots, cutting ditches and rough shaping for ponds and roads. Most of our dirt work is on farms, pasture, timber tracts and homesites across North Florida and South Georgia.
A lot of our excavation work starts as part of a land clearing job. Once the brush and trees are down, the stumps and root balls still have to come out. The excavator pulls them, fills the holes and levels the ground back. Other calls are plain dirt work, like a ditch that quit draining or a low spot that holds water.

Most of what we dig is land work on private property. The excavator cuts new ditches and cleans out old ones so water moves again. It pulls stumps and root balls during a full clear and fills the holes back in. It also moves dirt from a high spot to a low one and spreads it out.
Some of our excavation is the rough shaping under a bigger job. When we are digging a pond, the machine opens the hole, shapes the banks and spreads the spoil dirt. When we build a gravel driveway or farm road, it cuts the base first. Then it shapes a crown so water sheds off the surface.
The dump truck and dump trailer come with us. Brush, stumps and dirt get loaded straight from the dig, so the ground is clean when the machines leave.
The ground changes fast around Monticello. The town sits about 235 feet up in the Red Hills. That is the rolling clay country running north toward Thomasville, Georgia. Those uplands are clay under a layer of loamy sand, and iron gives the soil its red color.
South of town the land drops off at the Cody Escarpment into flatwoods. That ground is sand on top with a hardpan about one to three feet down. Water sits on the hardpan instead of soaking through, so low fields and pasture stay wet after a rain. Cutting or cleaning a ditch is often the fix, and that side of the job is land drainage work.
Rain runs about 55 to 60 inches a year here, and summer is the wet stretch. Clay turns slick when it is soaked, and soft flatwoods ground will not carry a loaded machine. We look at access and soil before setting a start date, and some digs wait for a dry week.
