Land around Cairo does not stay open on its own. A pasture edge grows up in briars and privet inside a couple of seasons. Fence rows fill with vines until the wire cannot be seen. Wet low places creep out into good ground, and cutover timber comes back thicker than it went.

Grady County is farm ground first. The 2022 USDA agriculture census counted 408 farms here and 110,417 acres in farms. Cotton leads the crop acres at about 13,186, with peanuts, hay and corn behind it. Pecans cover close to 1,800 acres.
Pasture is the other half of the picture. The same count put 8,311 acres in pasture and 22,187 head of cattle in the county. Cattle ground means fence, and fence in this climate means brush. Vines, briars, saplings and privet grow into the wire until a run cannot be seen.
We take that back with a skid steer mulcher on open runs and the excavator on tight fence. Clearing fence lines from both sides lets a farmer repair or rebuild the wire without fighting brush first. The excavator reach keeps the machine off the fence. The same setup opens field edges, old orchard ground and closed-in turn rows.
There is a USDA soil series named for this county. The Grady series came out of early soil survey work here, and it maps wet upland depressions. Those spots are poorly drained and slow to take water. The official description puts the water table at or near the surface six to eight months of the year.
Native cover in those low places runs to cypress, blackgum, live oak and water oak. Landowners know them as the holes that never dry out. Brush closes in around the edges and the usable ground shrinks a little every year. Most of the county drains into the Upper Ochlockonee River basin, so creeks cut through a lot of these farms.
Tired Creek Lake, the county's 960 acre lake, sits where Black Creek, Buss Creek and Sapp Creek come together. Water like that is why we run a mulching head on the excavator. The boom reaches down a creek bank, ditch bank or pond edge from firm ground above. The same excavator digs and cleans out farm ponds and cuts drainage ditches when that is the work.
Woodland is not a small slice of Grady County. The 2022 agriculture census put 45,272 acres of woodland inside farm boundaries, slightly more than the 45,054 acres of cropland. Much of that is planted pine, hardwood along the creeks and cutover that came back thick.
Storms add to the work here. Hurricane Michael crossed southwest Georgia on October 10, 2018, gusting to 115 mph at Donalsonville. It was the first major hurricane to reach the state since the 1890s. The National Weather Service put Georgia forestland damage at more than 2.3 million acres.
If a storm left limbs, root balls or a pile of trash wood, that is its own job. We load with the excavator or skid steer and haul with a dump truck and dump trailer. On a clearing job the material either stays on the ground as mulch or leaves in the truck. Either way the ground is left usable, and hauling off the debris is part of what we do.
Cairo had 10,179 people at the 2020 census and Grady County had 26,236. That is a small town with a lot of open country around it. Many new houses out here go on a cut of family land or a lot off a county road.
