A Florida DEP land study puts this part of Madison County in the Greenville Islands and Swamps province. The state calls that district low rolling limestone plains, shaped by streams and by the limestone dissolving below. In plain terms, you get broad flat ground with rolling uplands mixed into it.
The same study describes soils that change a lot over a short distance. Ridges hold well drained sand. Low, level areas hold poorly drained soil that stays wet after rain. Along the Aucilla corridor the state recorded ridges at 165 feet and river ground near 35 feet.
That mix decides how a clearing job runs on a Greenville tract. A dry sand ridge carries a machine in most weather. The low spots need a different approach, and we plan for that before a machine comes off the trailer.
Madison County is farm and timber country. The 2022 Census of Agriculture counted 645 farms across 159,522 acres here. That averages about 247 acres a farm, and 37 of them run over 1,000 acres.
The same count splits that land into 59,327 acres of cropland, 36,561 of pasture and 47,720 of woodland. Cotton, peanuts, hay and cattle all show up on this ground. Large tracts go back to brush in pieces, and it usually starts at the edges. Clearing puts open ground back where the pasture or the field used to be.
Understory here runs to saw palmetto, gallberry, fetterbush and titi on the low ground. Sweetgum, water oak and laurel oak come back thick on cut-over tracts, with greenbrier through the rest. On cattle and hunting land, the fence rows fill in first. Clearing fence lines on both sides lets a fence be seen, repaired or rebuilt.
The Aucilla River forms the Madison and Jefferson county line west of Greenville. The state lists it as an Outstanding Florida Water. Closer in, the Little Aucilla River drains 90.7 square miles above its USGS gauge near Greenville. Hixtown Swamp sits a few miles east of town, inside the same 32331 ZIP.
Wet ground is not only down at the river. A state survey of the Aucilla corridor mapped basin swamp, bottomland forest and hydric hammock through otherwise dry tracts. Cypress and black gum sit in low basins inside pine plantations, and those spots bog a skid steer.
We run a mulching head on the excavator as well as the skid steer. The reach lets the machine sit on firm ground and clear down a ditch bank or a pond edge. The same setup cleans out drainage ditches and works around a farm pond without churning the bank.
Two hurricanes crossed this county inside thirteen months. Idalia came ashore near Keaton Beach on August 30, 2023 as a Category 3 storm. The National Weather Service reported extensive damage to trees inland across the eastern Big Bend.
Helene followed on September 26, 2024, landing in Taylor County just east of the Aucilla River. It came in as a Category 4 storm and moved inland across Taylor and Madison counties. The weather service logged gusts of at least 90 to 100 mph inland, with severe tree damage.
Storm work on land means the wood already lying on the ground. We load brush, limbs, logs and root balls with the excavator or the skid steer. Hauling storm debris off a tract also opens the fence lines and farm roads back up.
