Thomas County sits at the center of the Red Hills. Tall Timbers Research Station puts the region at about 436,000 acres between Thomasville and Tallahassee. The ground rolls here, with sandy loam on top and red clay under it. That is different land from the flat sandy pine country down toward the coast.
The timber runs to longleaf, loblolly and shortleaf pine. Live oak, water oak and post oak mix in, with sweetgum, hickory, dogwood and red maple on the lower ground. Many of the big tracts are quail plantations, with the woods managed for bobwhite quail. On land like that the ask is usually the understory down and the good trees left standing.
That is what forestry mulching is for. A mulching head grinds brush and small stems in place, and the mulch layer stays where it falls. When a tract has to go to open dirt, we clear it and pull the stumps and roots. The excavator does that work and leaves usable ground.
The same farm census counted 366 farms in Thomas County. The average one runs 570 acres, up about a quarter since 2017, and 52 of them are over 1,000 acres. Land here is held in big pieces. Big pieces grow a lot of brush.
Cotton covered 36,106 acres in that count, peanuts 16,263 and corn 5,471. Pecans show up in the top crops, and the census listed 14,605 cattle and calves in the county. Farm ground like that means fence lines, orchard edges, field corners and pasture that wants to close in.
Chinese privet is the usual problem on a fence row. The US Forest Service records it across Georgia, where it takes over the shrub layer in bottom ground. Add briars, vines and sweetgum sprouts and a wire fence disappears. We do clearing brush off fence lines with the excavator, so the machine stays back off the wire.
The Aucilla River rises in Thomas County, and the Ochlockonee runs down the west side of the Red Hills. Between them the county is cut with creek heads, branches and wet draws. Those bottoms are where privet and vines get thickest. They are also where a skid steer bogs down.
That is the job for a mulching head on the excavator. The boom reaches down a creek bank or a ditch bank from solid footing above. It works close enough to clear one side of a pond and leave the trees you want. Wet pasture edges and choked drainage ditches open up the same way.
We dig ponds on private land here too. That covers a new farm or stock pond and reshaping one that is too small. It also covers cleaning out a pond that has silted in. Rules apply near creeks and wetlands, so check with Thomas County on what covers your tract before dirt moves.
Thomas County counted 45,798 people in the 2020 census, up from 44,744 in 2010. Thomasville itself holds about 18,900 of them. Growth here is steady, and most of it lands on the edges of town. It shows up as single homesites cut out of family land and lots off the county roads.
Clearing a building lot out here usually starts at the road. The drive back to a homesite can run a long way through timber. We cut the route, shape a crown so water sheds, and put gravel down. The same machines build a farm road to a barn, a back field or a hunting camp.
Hurricane Helene crossed the area on September 26, 2024. Over 6,400 Thomasville homes lost power, and crews spent days clearing fallen trees. Hurricane Michael hit Georgia timber harder in October 2018, damaging about 2.4 million acres of forestland statewide.
