Land in Madison County does not stay open on its own. A pasture edge that looked clean two summers ago fills in with sweetgum, water oak and briars. Old fence rows grow shut until the wire disappears. Family tracts that have sat since the last hurricane are thick with brush and downed limbs.

Madison County is farm country. The 2022 USDA agriculture census counted 645 farms here and 159,522 acres in farms. That land breaks down to about 59,000 acres of cropland, 36,500 acres of pasture and 47,700 acres of woodland. Cattle inventory was 26,480 head at the end of that year.
Pasture edges are where a lot of our clearing starts. Brush pushes in off the woods line and takes a few feet every year. We run the skid steer mulcher on open ground and the excavator where the edge is rough or soft. The open pasture comes back and the mulch stays where it falls.
Fences take the same beating. Vines, saplings and briars grow through the wire until a fence cannot be seen or repaired. Fence line clearing opens both sides of the run so the wire can be fixed or replaced. Excavator reach lets the machine work the line without leaning on the fence.
Madison sits about 190 feet above sea level on rolling upland. State geologists call this belt the Madison Hills. It runs east from Jefferson County to the Withlacoochee River valley, at roughly 70 to 200 feet. Clay-rich sediment caps those uplands.
Rivers bound the county on three sides. The Aucilla holds the west line, the Withlacoochee the north and east, and the Suwannee the southeast corner. Near the Withlacoochee the ground drops into a low karst plain under 80 feet. Soils there run to deep sand on the rises and wet, flooded ground in the bottoms.
That mix changes how a job runs. Clay uplands hold a machine after rain. Sand moves under the tracks, and river bottom stays soft for weeks. Excavator mulching covers the soft edges, since the boom works a creek bank while the machine sits on firm ground.
The 2020 census counted 17,968 people in Madison County and 8,315 housing units. It also counted the county as rural, with almost no residents in an urban area. Census estimates put the county near 18,800 people by 2025.
New houses here go on land rather than in a subdivision. That usually means a lot cut out of family acreage. A drive comes in off a county road, then ground is opened for the house and a barn. Farm acreage dropped about 5 percent between the 2017 and 2022 agriculture censuses.

Storms are part of owning land in this county. Madison County was named in the federal disaster declaration for Hurricane Idalia in August 2023. Three more followed in 2024, for Debby, Helene and Milton. Helene came ashore in the Big Bend as a Category 4 in late September 2024.
What is left afterward sits on the ground: tops, limbs, root balls and whole trees across pastures and fence lines. Some of it is still there two seasons later, because it takes a machine to move. We load with the excavator or the skid steer and haul it out with a dump truck and dump trailer.
Debris removal also covers piles that were pushed up and left in place. Old burn piles, cleared fence rows and stacked brush get loaded and hauled off the property. This is machine work on debris that is already on the ground.
