Leon County land changes as you drive south, and a clearing job changes with it. North of the Cody Scarp is the Red Hills country. Those are rolling clay hills over deep sandy clay, once pine and hardwood woodland. South of that line the ground flattens into the Woodville Karst Plain, where thin sand lies over limestone.
The 2022 farm census counted 372 farms in Leon County across 70,058 acres. Woodland made up 44,323 of those acres. Pasture came to 9,080 and cropland to 12,237. Most of these places are small, with 43 percent holding 10 to 49 acres.
That is the shape of the work here. A ten acre tract with a house on one end and woods on the other. A pasture edge that has grown in, or a wooded parcel nobody has touched in years. We look at the land first, then decide what gets mulched in place and what gets hauled.
Bradfordville lies about 8 miles north of Tallahassee, where US 319 meets Bannerman Road. The 2020 census counted 19,183 people there. The land is rolling hills and ravines with lakes and ponds scattered through it. Lake Iamonia sits to the northwest, and the Red Hills run on north to the Georgia line.
Killearn Lakes Plantation, the Ox Bottom area and the Centerville Road corridor hold a lot of large lots. Owners out there usually want the woods thinned rather than flattened. Forestry mulching grinds underbrush and small trees in place and leaves a mulch layer. The trees you mark stay standing.
Leon County protects its canopy roads by law. Centerville Road, Meridian Road, Miccosukee Road, Old Bainbridge Road and Old St. Augustine Road were designated in 1972. Old Centerville Road and Sunny Hill Road followed in 2005, then Pisgah Church Road in 2007. The protection zone covers all land within 100 feet of the road centerline.
South of town the ground goes flat. Woodville sits just below the city in ZIP 32305 and counted 4,097 people in 2020. This is the Woodville Karst Plain, where sandy soil lies thin over limestone. Rain drops through sinkholes and moves underground instead of running off the surface.
Leon Sinks, off US 319 south of Tallahassee, shows what that ground does. It holds at least eighteen sinkholes and a natural bridge where a stream disappears. Near Woodville the St. Marks River drops into Natural Bridge Sink and returns a quarter mile downstream. Flat land with water moving under it still holds puddles on top after a hard rain.
East toward Chaires and Capitola, and west toward Fort Braden, ditch banks and low corners stay soft. We run a mulching head on the excavator for that kind of ground. The boom reaches down a ditch bank or a pond edge from solid footing above. We also cut and clean drainage ditches so water leaves a field or a driveway.
Trees come down here. On May 10, 2024, three tornadoes hit parts of Tallahassee, and most of the damage was to trees. The city counted its broken power poles afterward. That one morning matched or beat Hurricanes Hermine, Michael and Idalia put together.
Hurricane Helene came ashore in Taylor County on September 26, 2024 as a Category 4. Tallahassee International Airport clocked a gust near 67 mph, and rain ran 4 to 8 inches. Storm wood on a back acre stays where it landed until a machine moves it. Loading brush piles, limbs and root balls into a dump truck is debris removal.
Leon County keeps building through all of it, with permits for 1,765 new housing structures authorized in 2024. Growth sits mostly in the northeast and southeast, around the Welaunee lands. Major projects there could add more than 7,000 homes. Those homesites start with clearing a building lot, and Sunshine 811 marks utilities before anyone digs.
